Some might say that the phone you’re peering at above is the most un-Nokia-like Nokia device produced in quite some time (if not ever), but remember, this one was custom made for US consumers and AT&T’s audience — something that’s not true for too many Espoo-sourced handsets. Once known as the Mako, Nokia’s Surge (or 6790 in international speak) is certainly unorthodox in design, though the actual specs list is fairly familiar. We get the feeling that Nokia was aiming to hit a very specific niche with this device, somewhere in-between the text-happy handsets adored by tweens and the smartphone desired by Mr. Suit. Design

We can’t help but start our evaluation by focusing on the motif. Nokia has managed to pull off a distinctly creative and atypical design on the Surge, and while some may pass it off as mildly unsightly at first glance, we’re actually big fans. The recessed “lip” at the bottom provides a great spot for sliding the screen up in order to reveal the spacious QWERTY keyboard, and the gliding motion is nothing short of delectable. The handset is sufficiently small, thin and light, though we do feel that it’s one of the more sturdy featurephones we’ve had the pleasure of handling. The glossy black finish is a fingerprint magnet, though the glowing backlit keys more than compensate. We will say, however, that Nokia could’ve stood to insert a slightly larger screen here. We mean, look at that bezel! There’s more than enough room around the current LCD to have expanded things a bit, and considering that this thing’s rocking Symbian S60, more pixels would’ve certainly been appreciated. That said, the combination of buttons on the main screen and the QWERTY keyboard underneath allowed us to navigate the OS sufficiently well, though we found ourselves tapping the screen on numerous occasions in a futile attempt to magically turn the non-touchscreen display into one that heeded our every finger press.

As for the button layout, we were generally pleased with the hard shortcuts (MEdia Net, main menu and Messaging) on the front of the device, though we would’ve loved for the central square “Enter” button to support scrolling. As it stands, the button only understands downward pressure, not swipes in any direction. Around the horn (read: edges), there’s a volume rocker that could stand to be more pronounced, a dedicated camera button, a woefully small 2.5mm headphone jack, an external speaker, an AC input and a USB socket. Sadly, you’ll have to remove the rear cover in order to access the microSD slot, but at least you don’t have to remove the Laptop battery / SIM card .

Upon sliding the screen upwards, you’re presented with a majestic, backlit QWERTY keyboard that puts most other text-friendly phones to shame. We’ll just go ahead and say it: the Surge’s keyboard is the best QWERTY board we’ve ever used, and considering just how long we’ve been pecking on those vertical iPhone and BlackBerry keyboards, that’s saying something. It took next to no time for us to fully adjust to the landscape layout, and within a few minutes of getting ourselves acclimated to the spacing, we were in texting heaven. The key travel is perfect, the spacing is utopian and unlike the XPERIA X1, the top row isn’t encroaching too heavily on the top of the display. It’s one of the first mobile keyboards that we’ve really felt comfortable using for long periods of time, and we honestly started dreaming of things to say just so we had an excuse to text yet another member of our contact list. If you’re one of those folks who puts out 10,000+ texts per month, you owe it to yourself to try the Surge.

Software and features

Despite the fact that Nokia gifted the Surge with just a 2.4-inch 320 x 240 resolution display, it still went ahead and loaded up S60. We can’t say that we didn’t find ourselves wishing for more screen real estate, but there’s plenty here if you’re willing to compromise. Put simply, using S60 was a pure joy on the Surge. Flipping the phone open and closed (and from horizontal to vertical) yielded screen refreshes that were startlingly quick, and we couldn’t find even a hint of lag anywhere in system. Every single application we opened was ready to rumble within a matter of nanoseconds, and unlike HTC’s Hero, we really felt as if the hardware was plenty capable of keeping up with the software. Even when flipping from the camera to the Messaging screen and onto the web, each transition was alarmingly quick. We never witnessed even a hint of lag while texting / banging out emails, and the general responsiveness of the entire OS had us marveling. Of course, it’s not like everything was peaches and cream. S60 still has quite aways to go before it’s as robust as Apple’s iPhone OS 3.0 and Google’s Android, and the overall dearth of applications was evidence of that. Better Place unveiled its battery swap system today and said the $500,000 gadget can replace a dead Discount laptop battery and get you back on the road in less time than it takes to fill your gas tank.

The prototype revealed in Japan is the first of what the Silicon Valley startup promises will be countless automated battery exchange stations that will one day dot our cities. The technology will make it possible to travel long distances in an EV without the hassle of stopping to recharge your battery, company founder and CEO Shai Agassi said.

“Today marks a major milestone for the automotive industry as well as Better latitude D820 battery Place,” Agassi said during the demonstration in Yokohama, which was shown live via webcast. “For nearly a century, the automotive industry has been inextricably tied to oil. Today we are demonstrating a new path forward.”

The demonstration came six months after Better Place opened 17 EV charging stations in Tel Aviv, the first step in its plan to have 150,000 places to plug in throughout Israel by 2011. The company, which is working with Renault on an EV, also plans to have 100 Dell CF623 swap stations in Israel by then. It’s a model the startup hopes to replicate in Denmark, Australia, California, Hawaii and other locations where it has forged alliances with governments and utilities to hasten the adoption of cars with cords.

Taken together, the two developments show just how far Better Place has come in the 19 months since Agassi announced his audacious plan to bring EVs to the masses.

And how far it still has to go.

 

Most of the major automakers are racing to develop electric vehicles, and the first of them are slated to arrive next year. The question many people have is just where we’re supposed to charge those cars when they aren’t in our driveways.

Better Place is but one company trying to solve that riddle, and it’s approaching it from two sides. First, it wants to blanket cities with charging stations that would be installed in public parking lots and other locations. That’s relatively straightforward; far more challenging - some would say ludicous - is its plan to establish networks of thinkpad T43 battery swap stations. That was the focus of today’s demonstration in Japan, where the Ministry of Environment has signed on with Better Place to spur the adoption of EVs.

The technology shown in Yokohama was little more than a proof-of-concept prototype, and it works a lot like an automated car wash. (The demo model was installed on a raised platform so the audience could see how it works.) As the video below shows, the system uses robotic trays - Better Place calls them “shuttles” - to remove a depleted VGN-FS battery and replace it with a fresh one while everyone stays in the car. The shuttles can be used with a wide variety of battery shapes and sizes, and Agassi said the system can make a swap in less than a minute.

“The goal was to make the switch of a battery faster than filling your tank,” Agassi told the audience, which included Denmark’s and Israel’s ambassadors to Japan. “We have seen this device work in under 40 seconds in our shop.”

The swap technology is still a work in progress, and Better Place plans to continue refining it during trials in Japan and Israel using prototype EVs from Renault, Subaru and Mitsubishi. Once deployed, the swap stations will be used in conjunction with charging stations to keep electric cars going. Better Place will own the Thinkpad T60 battery and charging infrastructure and sell consumers “subscriptions” similar to cell phone plans. “We’re an electrical services provider,” is how Sidney Goodman, VP of auto alliances, explained it to us recently. “We buy Discount laptop batteries and electricity, and we sell miles.”

Goodman concedes there will one day be many different makes and models of electric cars on the road, but they’ll use batteries from a relatively small number of manufacturers. That makes the standardization issue less of a headache. And even if some automakers don’t sign on to the swap strategy, their cars will still work with Better Place’s charging stations. That means consumers will still benefit from the startups technology.

Then there’s the matter of paying for it all. Agassi says the swap stations could cost $500,000 apiece, and Goodman says the cost to bring 150,000 charge stations and 100 battery swap stations to Israel could hit $200 million. It’ll cost about that much to do the same in Denmark.

Better Place has raised more than $200 million in funding and forged partnerships with several governments and utilities. But it concedes it will need more than that if its plan is to succeed on a massive scale.

“The challenge isn’t the Laptop battery, and it isn’t the cars,” Goodman told us. “It’s the coalition you need to make it happen. It’s a huge integration project. All of these components are progressing. But they need to be brought together.”

1) Go to Start/Control Panel/Power Options and look for the “Alarms” tab.

With the downturn in the economy and the retraction of traditional sources of capital, cleantech entrepreneurs are facing difficulty securing financing to commercialize technologies VGP-BPS5A , build manufacturing facilities and scale their companies. The Obama administration and Congress have sent a clear signal with the ARRA stimulus package: government will play a vital role in filling that financing gap. Provisions such as the increased DOE loan guarantee program, extension of the PTC/ITC with rebate provisions, and the impending energy bill will provide necessary momentum for the cleantech community.
